{"id":1463,"date":"2022-03-30T16:18:46","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T20:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chestnutlakecamp.com\/blog\/?page_id=1463"},"modified":"2026-03-03T11:04:28","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T16:04:28","slug":"arrival-packing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.chestnutlakecamp.com\/blog\/chestnut-essentials\/arrival-packing","title":{"rendered":"Arrival &#038; Packing"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Arrival &amp; Packing<\/h1>\n<p><b>Preparation for camp is a vital step in ensuring a successful summer for campers and parents.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Although the time when campers are living at camp with their friends, enjoying a day filled with fun activities, is what we all look forward to, the seemingly simple organization and logistics behind packing a camper\u2019s bags, getting those bags to camp, and getting on a bus to come for the start of their session are essential and not as easy as they sometimes seem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By this time of year, many of our families \u2013 especially those who have had campers at Chestnut Lake in the past \u2013 may have started getting ready for camp. But there is still plenty of time. Families who have been with us in the past are familiar with our usual arrival plans and how we like to start the session. <\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>ARRIVING AT CAMP<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>The arrival experience is significant. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know, as long-time camp leaders and as camp parents ourselves, that the start of the session can be the most crucial tone-setting aspect of the whole summer \u2013 both for the campers and for the parents. Especially in a camper\u2019s first summer, a smooth, positive separation from parents and arrival in Beach Lake can make a difference. These are the keys to a smooth arrival:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Parents preparing a child for camp \u2013 especially for the first time or when there are concerns or trepidation \u2013 should begin early<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s unlikely to be any benefit in waiting to discuss and work on your child\u2019s readiness for camp. Use the time you have for all the steps and conversations needed, and enjoy the ramp-up to summer to fine-tune and address anything that comes up.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have not already <\/span><b>reviewed the Camp Handbook<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 specifically the Appendices (B and C) for \u201c<\/span><b>First-Time Advice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and \u201c<\/span><b>Camper Prep\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, we recommend doing so now. There are some helpful suggestions shared there.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>We strongly recommend using our usual charter bus transportation to\/from camp<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are stops in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. More than 95% of our families choose bus transportation, and we feel it offers campers a superior experience to being dropped off at camp because goodbyes are easier, they ride with other camp kids and staff, and when they arrive at Chestnut Lake, they enjoy a more fun welcome.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Here are the bus pickup locations we expect at this time for 2026 (locations may be updated on\/after January 2026):\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"sh-color-black sh-color\">GREATER DC AREA | Bethesda, MD<\/li>\n<li class=\"sh-color-black sh-color\">BALTIMORE AREA | Hunt Valley, MD<\/li>\n<li class=\"sh-color-black sh-color\">PHILADELPHIA AREA | Wynnewood, PA<\/li>\n<li class=\"sh-color-black sh-color\">NORTH JERSEY AREA | Livingston, NJ<\/li>\n<li class=\"sh-color-black sh-color\">LONG ISLAND AREA | Manhasset, NY<\/li>\n<li class=\"sh-color-black sh-color\">WESTCHESTER AREA | White Plains, NY<\/li>\n<li class=\"sh-color-black sh-color\">NEW YORK CITY AREA | 92NY (Upper East Side)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your decisions regarding transportation to\/from camp will be shared through a <\/span><b>Transportation Form<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your MyCLC account.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Florida-based campers can choose from group flights to\/from camp<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Florida-based campers and others flying in from great distances will be expected to arrive the day before the start of the camp session, but will leave on the same day that the session ends for everyone else.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Any international families or others who need to arrange flights or airport pick-ups\/drop-offs can complete a special online form<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>For those who may opt to drop campers off at camp by car, please keep in mind that only campers will be permitted to enter camp beyond the drop-off point<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 no parents will be given access to cabins or other facilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once campers arrive at camp \u2013 no matter how they come \u2013 <\/span><b>we take care of getting them acclimated, settled, connected, and excited about the start of their session at Chestnut Lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>GETTING BAGGAGE TO\/FROM CAMP<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The arrival and departure of campers are critical considerations. One key dimension is ensuring a camper\u2019s baggage arrives in advance.<\/strong> This process allows counselors time to completely unpack each camper\u2019s belongings in the cabin, make their bed with their bed linens, and store their baggage until the end of the session. When campers arrive at the start of their session, they feel welcome and ready to have fun at Chestnut.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At Chestnut, we believe\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>giving our families\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>options is essential<\/strong><\/em><\/span>. We know that families have various needs and priorities, and therefore, we try to be as flexible as possible. At the same time, <strong>we make thoughtful, reliable recommendations to families that align with Chestnut&#8217;s commitment to service quality<\/strong>. In that regard, you will see our recommended options for 2024 below, and we look forward to a successful summer with the camp baggage process.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Visit your MyCLC account to review the Guide.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">All families must submit (for each camper) an online <strong>Baggage Plan form<\/strong> through your <a href=\"https:\/\/chestnutlake.campintouch.com\/v2\/login.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MyCLC<\/a> account (in &#8220;Forms &amp; Documents&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Parents can choose any method of baggage delivery\/pick-up they like, but we recommend the following <\/strong>(see more details included later in this Baggage Guide)<strong>:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/doorvadoor.com\/chestnut-lake-camp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Door-va-Door<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shipcamps.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ship Camps<\/a><\/li>\n<li>In-Person Drop-Off\/Pick-Up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Please make sure to use this address for delivery:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chestnut Lake Camp | 326 Trails End Road, Beach Lake, PA 18405<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Baggage delivery\/pick-up <strong>deadlines<\/strong> are as follows for 2026:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First Session\/Full Summer: Bags must arrive by June 22nd\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>First Session: Bags must be picked up\/shipped home by July 25th<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Second Session: Bags must arrive by July 25th<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Second Session\/Full Summer: Bags must be picked up\/shipped home by August 16th \u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If your child will be attending <strong>Discovery Camp<\/strong>, their bags should come with the Discovery Campers to camp and will NOT need to be shipped separately. Regarding the return of their bags, they will be picked up by their parents on the last day of the Disco Camp program.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Parents will choose the baggage solution that makes the most sense for them, but it is essential that:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The bags are labeled very clearly. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The bags are very durable. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The bags can be easily stored during the camp session. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The bags should not be oversized (please try to use bags that, when filled with supplies, weigh no more than 75 pounds). <\/strong>We recommend soft (but durable) bags, if possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Campers can always bring a backpack, hand-carriables, and other small items on the bus (or by car\/flight). If you are looking for baggage recommendations, you can search for options from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everythingcamper.com\/category_s\/326.htm\"><strong>Everything Camper<\/strong><\/a>. <strong>Please make sure that ALL BAGS ARE MARKED WITH YOUR CHILD\u2019S FULL NAME.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>PACKING<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Gathering, organizing, and packing all the stuff a child needs for camp is a big part of preparing for the summer.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We know\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">the Packing List (available in MyCLC) may seem extensive to some, but we assure you that our team carefully considers and revisits what is included each<\/span>\u00a0year. We&#8217;ve also added some helpful hints in our Packing Pointers (also in your MyCLC account). These are the keys to packing:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Look for durable, inexpensive, and informal apparel and supplies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are so many ways to shop today (online, retail outlets, specialty stores, etc.) that it may take some time to find the best options. Sometimes, hand-me-downs or borrowed items can be an alternative to spending a lot on new products, but most stuff should last more than a year.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>All sessions (except Discovery Camp) will have access to the weekly laundry service<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We will provide a special camp bag for each camper (they will also need their own), and our outside service will pick it up once a week. They will empty the bag (keeping the items together), wash the clothes, dry the clothes, fold the clothes, return the clothes to the bag, and bring the bag back to the cabin. This whole process usually takes two days. Be sure to send a small mesh bag for delicate items that your child can include in the laundry bag.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Discovery Campers\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>can access a special Packing List\u00a0<\/strong>in\u00a0their MyCLC account.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Remember that we have towel service for all cabins, the pool, and the lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. No towels need to be brought from home (but hand towels and\/or washcloths may be helpful).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>If we told you to LABEL EVERYTHING being sent to camp one million times, it still wouldn&#8217;t be enough! <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If an item (apparel, supplies, or really, anything!) has a child\u2019s full name on it, there\u2019s a chance it will be returned when it is lost. If there is no label, it may be lost forever.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>There are some special activities at camp (including our Color War program called &#8220;Tribal&#8221;) that are enhanced when campers bring specific apparel\/supplies.<\/strong> We will share these recommendations before the summer. Starting in 2022, we also provided new campers with a great &#8220;Tribal Starter Kit&#8221; containing basic supplies they receive once they learn about their Tribal team at camp.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">In previous years, Chestnut had a policy that required only one-piece bathing suits. After great thought and discussion (including with our campers), we altered this policy in 2023. We now allow two-piece bathing suits (like \u201ctankinis\u201d and \u201cbikinis\u201d), but only\u00a0<\/strong><em style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><strong>on the condition that\u00a0<\/strong><em>Chestnut Lake remains<\/em>\u00a0a low-key, down-to-earth, and wholesome environment for campers and staff. In keeping with this philosophy, <strong>we ask parents to ensure that swimwear sent to camp is comfortable for their child, supports their child\u2019s development of a positive body image, and is suitable for physically active programs in the lake and pool throughout the summer. We also want to stress that swimwear should not be sexually suggestive or immodest.<\/strong> While we recognize that this is a subjective criterion, we ask parents to avoid string bikinis and other suit styles they feel might be deemed inappropriate by Chestnut\u2019s leaders. If we think that a camper should change into a different bathing suit, we will ask them to do so discreetly.<\/em> <strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">If you have questions about this policy,\u00a0<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><strong>please get in touch with\u00a0<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ann<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong><b>Although we are not a \u201cuniform camp,\u201d the Packing List includes the REQUIRED uniform apparel items that ALL campers must have each summer. These are 4 T-shirts, 1 sweatshirt, and two pairs of shorts. <\/b><b>You must get the T-shirts and sweatshirts from <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/everythingcamper.com\/collections\/chestnut-lake-camp-camp-category\"><b>Everything Camper<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The shorts do not have to be branded with the Chestnut Lake logo (but you are welcome to bring those through Everything Camper if you would prefer). We have pared down the required items over the last year and have simultaneously started giving campers some other Chestnut Lake apparel for free while they are at camp. <\/span><b>There may be delays with the delivery of items through <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/everythingcamper.com\/collections\/chestnut-lake-camp-camp-category\"><b>Everything Camper<\/b><\/a><b>, so we implore you to contact them and review the Camp Store options ASAP.\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong><b><\/b><b><\/b><b>We know that other vendors or individuals make and sell camp-branded apparel and supplies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In some camp communities, many families use these for their kids and purchase additional items. Please note that this is NOT the case at Chestnut Lake. Some families will buy extra items from Everything Camper, and others will get them from third parties, but we do not want any parent or camper to feel social pressure to do the same. There\u2019s nothing wrong with doing this, but we don\u2019t want people to feel like they have to.
