CLC Opening Campfire 2015

The lighting of Opening Campfire officially signals that our summer family is back together. This summer’s Opening Campfire had more spirit and energy than ever before! As we all gathered at the Campfire Site, everyone was singing, laughing and dancing as they waited for the special moment to begin.

 

Every Opening Campfire at Chestnut Lake actually starts when we say goodbye the summer before. The ashes from Closing Campfire are gathered in a container and buried, waiting in the ground until the following summer’s Opening Campfire.

During our first day of camp, each age division was given a special piece of wood that every camper and counselor was asked to sign. They talked about what Chestnut Lake means to them. These planks of wood were then added to the campfire. u472085_p15052934

At Opening Campfire, CLC’s youngest campers dug up the ashes and during Debbi and Paul’s welcome speech, they sprinkled the previous summer’s ashes onto the fire. This represents how each and every camper’s spirit carries forward summer after      summer. As we always say, once you’re a part of Chestnut Lake, Chestnut Lake is a part of you. Since the Ciqala dug the ashes up last summer, the Yazhi received the      privilege this summer. All of camp anxiously awaited as the Yazhi located the spot where the ashes were buried and pulled them from the ground.

After Debbi, Paul, Masey, Kelsie, Dan, Niki and Mike welcomed the campers, Varsity led the entire camp in the CLC alma mater. As alma mater ended, Garin lit the             traditional “Hello 2015” sign and camp broke out into our favorite chant, “Chestnut ‘til I Die!” We are all looking forward to another amazing summer at Chestnut Lake Camp.

Brotherly Love at Chestnut Lake Summer Camp

What could be better than riding the bus throughIMG_2054 the gates of Chestnut Lake Summer Camp for the start of summer 2015? Sharing that experience with your brother, of course! Xander Arnold is returning to his         summer home and this time his younger brother, Drake, is along for the ride. Drake came to visit Xander on Visiting Day last year and decided that he wanted to join him at camp this summer. They are both very excited to be sharing this experience           together and look forward to making memories that will last a lifetime. We asked the Arnold brothers to tell us a little more about themselves and what they love most about camp.

Xander:

My name is Xander Arnold and I am 9 years old. I am a rising 4th grader at The Bullis School. I live in Rockville, MD. I love to play and watch basketball and football.

Your favorite camp memories:

My favorite camp memories are being at tribal campfire, woodshop, the lake and banquet. As you can see…I have a lot of great memories.

How did you know Chestnut Lake Summer Camp was the right camp for you:

I love how organized everything was when I visited the camp. Paul and Debbi were so nice when I visited.

Brotherly Love at Chestnut Lake Summer Camp!

Chestnut Lake Discovery Camp – A Family Tradition!

Going to summer camp for the first time can be an anxious experience for a child.        Chestnut Lake strives to make the transition to camp life easier by offering campers the opportunity to participate in an introductory experience to Chestnut Lake called Discovery Camp.  Chestnut Lake Discovery Camp introduces campers to life at CLC and all of the exciting things that Chestnut Lake has to offer. Jordyn and Henry Faragalli                participated in Discovery Camp last year after hearing about Chestnut Lake from their cousins, Noah Grossman (6 years at CLC), Abby Grossman (4 years at CLC) and Aaron Grossman (2nd summer at CLC) This summer, Jordyn will be returning as a first year camper in the Yazhi Division and Henry will be returning for Discovery Camp along with his younger brother Zachary. Jordyn, Henry and Zachary shared some information about themselves and their thoughts on the upcoming summer at Chestnut Lake Camp.

My name is Jordyn Faragalli. I live in Bryn Mawr Pennsylvania. I’m 9 years old and currently in 3rd grade at the Shipley School. I have an older sister, a twin brother and a younger brother. I also have a dog named Lola. I love doing gymnastics and riding roller coasters and water slides .
My cousins went to Chestnut Lake Camp and said how great it was……best summers!
This will be my first summer at Chestnut Lake and I’m so excited. I can’t wait to do gymnastics, swim in the lake and ride the flying squirrel and the zip line. I went to Discovery Camp last year and knew Chestnut Lake was a great place. The activities were so much fun. All the counselors were so nice and my Big Sisterss were great,too! I loved everything about my experience at Discovery Camp and now I can’t wait to spend my first summer away at CLC.

This will be my second time at Discovery Camp. I can’t wait to ride mountain bikes and the banana boat, too! Also, my younger brother is going to       Discovery Camp which will be awesome!

My name is Zach Faragalli. I’m 7 years old and currently in 1st grade at The Haverford School. I am the youngest of 4 kids. I have 2 older sisters and an older brother. And I can’t forget our dog Lola! I love to play football, basketball and baseball. I’m so excited about Discovery Camp. It’s my first time and I can’t wait to ride the banana boat!!

A Weekend Full of Friends & Fun!

As each CLC summer comes to an end, campers say their goodbyes to staff and friends and immediately start looking forward to the next time we’ll be together as a camp family: our winter reunions!

December not only marks the beginning of the Holidays, but it also means the Chestnut Lake Camp reunions are just around the corner!  We recently hosted our winter reunions in New Jersey and all of our Division Leaders and Head Counselors flew in from all across the country just to spend the special weekend with their campers!

 

The weekend started off on Saturday as we spent the afternoon at The Fun Plex with our campers currently in 7th-11th grades. Everybody had a great time hanging out together, riding go-carts and playing games.  As much fun as the games were, the highlight was reliving the summer of 2014 as we watched the 2014 Video Yearbook together.

On Sunday, the CLC staff spent the morning bowling with our campers currently in 1st – 6th grades.  The reunion started off with warm welcomes from Debbi and Paul followed by some activities and games led by the Division Leaders.  It’s always great seeing how excited our returning campers are to welcome new campers into the CLC Family.  After bowling and pizza, the campers came together for a raffle.  Campers won prizes such as an ice cream party for their bunk, golf cart ride by Paul and a pizza party for the entire bunk in the brand new Canteen!  Being able to spend time with our Chestnut Lake family makes us look forward to Opening Campfire 2015 even more…only 188 more days!

Discovery Camp at Chestnut Lake

Chestnut Lake Discovery Camp is one of our favorite weekends at Chestnut Lake. Discovery Camp offers future CLC campers the opportunity to spend a weekend with us and discover what the Chestnut Lake Camp experience is all about!

This past weekend our Discovery Camp Campers arrived and had the opportunity to experience what it’s like being part of the Chestnut Lake family. Upon arrival, each Discoverer was given a CLC big sister or big brother. Siblings, cousins, friends from home and CLC Big Brothers and Sisters gave them a spirited CLC welcome as they came off the Discovery Camp bus. The first thing they did was visit their bunks and receive their special Discovery Camp t-shirts. Then the CLC Big Brothers and Sisters gave them a tour around camp.

After they had lunch, the Discoverers started in on all the great activities that CLC has to offer. Discovery Camp Campers could be seen around camp flying through the air on the zip line and flying squirrel, making special projects at Arts & Crafts and skimming across the water on the banana boat. After dinner, the Discovery Camp Campers were introduced to the whole camp at line-up. As the guests of honor, they were given the privilege of lowering the flag. Then they enjoyed S’mores at the Campfire site. After S’mores, they were introduced to one of the many traditions at Chestnut Lake, Nancy Tucker. Nancy Tucker is always a huge hit at CLC as she plays her guitar and sings Chestnut favorites such as “Jelly Fish”, “One Meatball” and “To Stop the Train”.

By Sunday morning, the only way you could tell the Discovery Camp Campers apart from the rest of the CLC campers was from their special tie-dye Discovery shirts! They continued their CLC weekend with activities like gymnastics, gaga, swimming at the pool and Outdoor Adventure. After lunch, they participated in a special scavenger hunt led by their CLC big brother or sister.

Messy Thursday and Halloween

Here at CLC, we have a special day that campers and counselors love! Varsity 1 gets to set up and run Messy Thursday and Halloween!

The afternoon starts off with Messy Thursday and each camper in Varsity runs a station. Each station is a unique and different game that gets the campers covered in chocolate syrup, whipped cream, ice cream, pudding or even spaghetti! There are seven different stations including some personal favorites like musical chairs, hot potato with a pie and slip ‘n slide. After a couple hours of Messy Thursday, all of camp reports to the Lake to jump in and wash off all of the food. This year Beth, the Lake Director, added a blob contest at the end of Messy Thursday.

After Messy Thursday, we have HALLOWEEN!!! Of course you shower and get all cleaned up from Messy Thursday first, and then you get to dress up in your Halloween costume! Halloween is one of the most popular evening activities at camp because not only is it fun… but everyone gets candy! You get to trick-or-treat and play different games down at the lake. There are decorations all around camp made by Varsity. They range from cute signs decorating buildings to scary candles lining the path to the lake. Also, as you walk down to the lake, upper campus gets to hear a spooky story and get scared by the counselors who act out the story!

When you finally get down to the lake there are different stations set up all around! This year, we added a station where you get to decorate your own Rice Krispie Treats. Along with the Rice Krispie treats, you also get to eat something called a dirt cup. Trust me, it is a lot better than it sounds! It is pudding, Oreos and a gummy spider all mixed together! There are also other stations, including palm reading, guessing the amount of gemstones in a jar, tattoos and bozo buckets.

Finally, to end the day, all of camp goes to the basketball courts where awards and prizes are given out. Some people win scariest costume, cutest costume, best camp homemade costume and overall best costume! Also, the winner for guessing the number of gemstones is announced and they get free canteen! Overall, it is a fun-filled day that has non-stop activity! It is definitely one of the best days at CLC!

Dutch Auction and Hypnotist

The fourth week of camp got off to a great start as everyone welcomed the new campers. That night, we held one of the funniest activities at CLC: the Dutch Auction. Campers meet at the hockey pavilion where they are given special instructions for the activity. To start, they are given a set amount of time to return to their bunks and fill one laundry bag with as many random items as possible. When the campers can go, they leave the hockey pavilion faster than parents on Visiting Day! Once they return, they are given many scenarios to act out utilizing whatever they have in their bag. Scenarios include how Curtis should have proposed to Niki, best Let It Go impression, best Division Leader impersonation and best superhero outfit.

Dutch Auction was followed a couple nights later by another one of the funniest activities, The Hypnotist. Everyone gathered on the cookout slope to listen to the hypnotist’s power of persuasion. After explaining how hypnotism works, everyone followed along with some basic relaxation exercises. Next, several staff members were selected to go on stage to participate in the show. Staff members quickly found themselves relaxing to the point of sleep, primed for hilarious suggestions from the hypnotist. One of the suggestions included watching an imaginary tv, surfing the channels, going between comedies, sad dramas and scary movies. Some of the other suggestions included driving a bus over curvy roads, trying to get the attention of the ice cream truck that produces the best ice cream in the world and Twitter’s $1,000,000 selfie contest. The authentic reactions of the staff kept everyone amazed and laughing the whole time.

What a great way to start second session!

Color War: Minsi Wolves vs. Unami Turtles

Tribal is a tradition that showcases the CLC spirit more than any other in camp.  During Tribal, CLC’s Color War, the Minsi Wolves and Unami Turtles deck themselves out in green and white clothing, paint their faces and sing their Tribal songs and cheers all throughout camp.141b5b13-980d-470c-a58f-912108688c93

This summer, Tribal started with the Apache Relay. The Apache Relay is a giant relay race that encompasses every area in camp as well as every camper and counselor. Not only do campers compete in activities familiar to camp like swimming and running races, juggling a soccer ball, climbing the rock wall, popping a balloon at archery and kayaking around the docks; but they also compete in fun activities like singing “Chestnut Til I Die” over the PA system, playing leapfrog around the volleyball courts, performing the Hokey Pokey and wrapping someone in toilet paper!

During Tribal Color War, the Unami and Minsi also compete against each other in typical camp activities like flag football, hockey, soccer, basketball, golf, tennis and softball. Not only can each team earn more points for winning, but they can also earn bonus spirit points for showing their Minsi and Unami spirit. Campers and counselors can be seen and heard all over camp as they earn extra points for their tribe!

Tribal Color War is anchored by a few “full tribe” competitions. On the first night, the campers and counselors competed in the annual Tribal Tug-O-War. Each division went head to head, Minsi vs Unami, trying to overpower the other tribe for points.

The next day, they competed in the Tribal Cheer competition. Both tribes showed their spirit as they stayed in sync and chanted and sang their favorite Tribal Cheers.

Tribal ended with one of our favorite competitions: Rope Burn! Representatives from each tribe were tasked with building a fire from the ground up that would eventually burn through a rope 10’ in the air. Both tribes built amazing fires, but it was the Minsi rope that broke first.

The Rope Burn win was enough to catapult the Minsi to the overall win.  And while the Wolves celebrated their victory, the Unami showed their true CLC spirit and character as they cheered along with them.  As always, Tribal Color War came to an end with both tribes coming together arm-in-arm and singing the CLC alma mater.

Tribal Campfire

One of the most highly anticipated traditions at Chestnut Lake is our Tribal Campfire. All of the returning campers and staff deck themselves out in either green or white, while the new campers and staff anxiously wait to find out which Tribe they will be on.

But before we officially started Tribal Campfire, we announced our Community Service Award winners. Each week, campers and staff turn in Community Service Nominations for someone in camp who they feel represents everything Chestnut Lake Camp stands for. The campers and staff whose nominations are chosen, read them aloud to the whole camp and then announce who is receiving the award. While the recipient is always thrilled to have their name called, what makes this such a special CLC tradition is that the person who gives the award is even happier!

Once the Community Service Awards were finished, it was on to Tribal. The new campers and staff went to the lake and recited the Tribal Oath. When they walked back up to the campfire site, they were surprised to find the Unami and Minsi teams lining both sides of the path. At the campfire, each division was called up, and as they faced the campfire, they received one stripe of their new Tribal team’s color on each cheek. As they waited anxiously, they were told to “face your new tribe”. Every time a new division turned around, their new team was there to welcome them. Now the Unami Turtles and the Minsi Wolves can’t wait for the first Tribal Competition!

4th of July Celebration-CLC style

Chestnut Lake celebrated America’s birthday in typical CLC style…with a whole lot of spirit!

The whole camp was split into Red, White and Blue teams for our annual CLC Regatta. Campers worked together to design and build boats out of duct tape and cardboard.  Our Varsity, Kaya and Sani campers created parade floats out of the camp golf carts.

Then the whole camp lined Chestnut Lake Avenue as the procession of regatta boats and floats passed by.  The floats threw candy to the crowd as they cheered them along.  Everyone was decked out in 4th of July outfits…Miss Massachusetts, Florida, New Jersey, Idaho, Colorado and Illinois even made a special appearance.

Then it was time for one of Chestnut Lake’s favorite traditions: CLC Regatta.  Each team and division chose their own captains to paddle their boats across the pool to victory.  There were many various designs.  Some worked and some didn’t, but everyone had a blast cheering their boats on!

1ecbf6bd-cc20-4de0-b8d3-bc956c005282 We capped the day with a very special performance by the Yazhi and Ciqala.  They reminded the CLC family what Independence Day is all about and performed a few patriotic numbers.  The grand finale of the show was an amazing display of fireworks that everyone enjoyed.
